Abstract General Information
Title
UROTHERAPY AUDIOVISUAL FOR CHILDREN WITH LOWER URINARY TRACT SYMPTOMS
Introduction and objective
Standard Urotherapy is recommended by the International Children's Continence Society (ICCS) as the first line of treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms. It is a conservative, non-invasive and non-pharmacological intervention based on education about the urinary and gastrointestinal system, training in proper habits, support and encouragement. Although the information is clear and well defined in the literature, it is observed that the clinical application is most often directed to the tutor, in addition to being very technical, which hinders the active participation and adherence of the child to the treatment. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop an evidence-based educational video with standard urotherapy concepts in accessible language for Brazilian children aged 5 to 12 years.
Method
This is a narrative review of the literature followed by the development of an educational video with guidelines. At first, a search was carried out in the main databases using the descriptors urotherapy children, urotherapy, physiotherapy, child, urotherapy children nocturnal enuresis, educational video, which included articles published in the last 15 years, which followed the ICCS criteria. Subsequently, a script for the video was developed based on the content of the review, with essential requirements, creation of characters, speeches and images and finally the video interface was developed with the collaboration of illustrators, web designer and sound design in Portuguese.
Results
The main recommendations found in the literature are in line with the latest ICCS publication that recommends 5 standard urotherapy topics: 1. Provision of information and demystification; 2. Life-style advice; 3. Instructions and behavioral modifications to achieve optimal bladder and bowel habits: 4. Registration of symptoms and voiding habits; 5. Support and encouragement. Such topics were approached in a playful and animated way by the characters “Rim” and “Bexiga” in the animated educational video 'I control my pee' produced by BB.art.
Conclusion
The educational video ‘I control my pee’ was developed in Portuguese with concepts of standard urotherapy with accessible language for children aged 5 to 12 years, based on evidence.
